New Lagos traffic law is exaggerated – Ipaye

Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye
Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, on Friday accused some members of the public of exaggerating the new traffic law in the state.
Ipaye said this in Lagos where he represented Governor Babatunde Fashola at a forum to mark the governor’s 1,900 days in office.
Ipaye said the law was deliberately misconstrued to misinform members of the public.
He said, “I think the new traffic law is being unnecessarily exaggerated. Some people have said the law says you cannot use phone in Lagos. That is borne out of lack of understanding of the law.
“Most of what is in the law is what we already know and is in operation not only in Lagos State, but other states.
“What the law really does is to prohibit you from engaging your hands in other activities while driving. The law says you must not smoke or eat while driving. It is to prevent you from constituting a nuisance on the road or endanger other road users.”
He promised that government would make the law available, especially on its website, for the public to have an easy access to it.
At the event, which was attended by former governor of the state, Lateef Jakande, Ipaye noted that the Fashola Administration in the last one year had impacted positively in the environmental sector, rural development, local government and chieftaincy affairs.
For example, he explained that the Eko Atlantic project in the state was, essentially, “a reclamation and environmental project.”
He said through the project, the reclaimed area, which had been lost to coastal erosion since the late 1950s, had expanded to 3,081,050 metres cube by June 12.
Also, the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Olusola Oworu, said the government had put in place all necessary measures to enhance direct foreign investment in the state.
