The outgoing Vice
Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has said
the institution will soon establish a Geology Research Centre at
Aran-Orin in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin on Saturday, Oloyede said the centre would examine if there was crude oil deposit in the LGA.
The Kwara State Governor, Mr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, had, about a year ago, claimed that crude oil had been found in the area.
Ahmed had said a farmer
alerted the state government of the discovery and that preliminary
investigations by government sponsored scientists confirmed the finding
but had yet to determine whether the crude was in commercial quantity or
not.
Oloyede said the varsity
would fund the research centre with about N100m from UNILORIN’s N4.2bn
intervention fund from the Federal Government.
He attributed the achievements of his administration to solid structure of the varsity and the feats of his predecessors.
